The causes of reflux can be quite varied. However it is important to try and understand what may be the cause of reflux in your own particular situation. This will allow you to get the right reflux help in combating the condition.

Acid reflux and other types of severe reflux affects millions of people. Many people turn to some form of reflux medication to try and ease and cope with the situation. The truth is that in many cases, medication is not always the best approach for getting reflux help.

Knowing what is behind the cause of your reflux is an important factor. The food that you consume goes into your stomach, and that results in the production of acid to aid in the breakdown of the food. Your body can then start to use the vitamins and nutrients.

Once the food has travelled down your oesophagus into your stomach, a small valve which is connected at the bottom of the oesophagus and the top of your stomach, closes. This valve is called the LES, and it closes to prevent the acid in your stomach travelling up your oesophagus. A common cause of reflux is when the valve stops doing what it is meant to.

If the LES stops working properly, it will not be able to prevent acid escaping from the stomach. This results in the oesophagus being filled with stomach acid. This is the cause behind that burning sensation that you might be familiar with. Apart from this discomfort there is also the strong possibility of the oesophagus being damaged by the stomach acid.

When this occurs, you will then be suffering from acid heartburn or reflux, and these conditions can vary from being mildly uncomfortable to being extremely painful. This condition should not be left untreated, it will not go away on its own. Avoiding any sort of reflux help will only result in the worsening of the condition.

Many people turn to drugs to eliminate the causes of reflux. Just like many other drugs, this will not get to the heart of the situation. It only hides the real cause of the problem. Many of the reflux medications that you get will restrict the amount of acid that your stomach produces. This means that there will be less acid travelling back up your oesophagus, but it will take longer to break down the food in your stomach.

Drugs which can have dangerous side effects are not always needed to help eliminate the causes of heartburn or reflux. Simple changes to your diet can often dramatically change the severity of reflux or heartburn. A positive effect can be achieved by just cutting down on the amount of food that you eat. The less food that you have in your stomach, the smaller the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Avoid consuming any food before you go to bed in the evening. This will mean that your stomach will have no need to produce acid. Just this step will prevent you waking up in the middle of the night with painful heartburn. Keep in mind that the type of food that you eat can have a big impact on the causes of reflux.

In conclusion, the causes of reflux in many cases can be controlled without the use of drugs, thus avoiding any side effects.
