Treatments For Profuse Sweating

By zoe | Mar 19, 2009

Although we all sweat naturally especially, in very warm, badly ventilated rooms, or when strenuously exercising, excess sweating is actually a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. People who suffer from hyper-hidrosis normally report excess sweating of their feet, hands and underarms, although it’s not unusual to have excessive sweating of the scalp, back, groin and also other areas where there are numerous sweat glands. There is even a specific type of excessive perspiration that occurs when sleeping, known as sleep hyperhidrosis. It doesn’t matter where the excessive sweating occurs because all variations cause issues for the sufferer, it could be the unsociable aspect of armpit stains, sweaty feet leaving marks on the floor or sweaty hands resulting in embarrassing handshakes, on top of which all will lead to body odor unless the sweat is washed off frequently.

Before seeking treatment of hyperhidrosis, it’s necessary to know how sweat glands are controlled normally. In people with normal sweat mechanisms, the sympathetic nervous system (part of the autonomic nervous system) regulates the function of the sweat glands. People have little control of this part of the nervous system . It’s the part that regulates our heart-beat, our breathing, our gut movement and many other body functions we’re unaware of.. unless something stops working properly.

Control of sweating goes wrong in those people who suffer from excessive sweating. Scientists know the root of the problem is hyper-activity of the nerves leading to the eccrine glands, because anti-cholinergic drugs, injections of botox, or surgery to sever the nerve leading to the sweat glands will stop the sweating. Those are three of the more dramatic ways to deal with hyperhidrosis. Less dramatic solutions for excess sweating are mental relaxation techniques, not drinking caffeinated drinks, using strong antiperspirants such as those with aluminium chloride and avoiding spicy foods. It’s also thought that the mineral zinc can help decrease sweating, as can sage tea.

Usually most people who have uncontrollable sweating will go for cheap, natural solutions, and if they still perspire too much will, think about  the more drastic treatments. It’s important to note that the most advanced remedies (surgery and drugs) will have unwanted side effects, so check with a doctor before taking any action regarding excessive sweating.
